Chapter 13

Fearghas

Lying in the dark alongside Eira, her head on my chest, is a high I never want to come down from.

And even as I know it can’t last, this moment—this evening—has been complete and utter perfection. The tips of her fingers draw circles on the skin of my abdomen as I run my own up and down her bare arm.

“How are you?”

“How am I?” I ask, lifting my hand from her arm to grip her chin and tilt her gorgeous face up to mine. “I just had incredible sex with a woman I’ve been in love with for over a thousand years. How do you think I am?”

“It was good, then?” she questions, face serious. “I was okay?”

“Are you kidding me?” I lean down and press my lips to hers. “You’re magnificent, Eira. Fucking perfect, and I do not deserve to even breathe the same air you do.”

The ghost of a smile passes over her lips. “You have that backward.”

Tilting my head down, I capture her lips with my own. The kiss is soft, tender, everything I’d once hoped for. Isn’t it ironic that, in the darkest moments of my life, I’ve found light?

My phone rings, and I ignore it, the ringtone fading into the background until, finally, it dies. But seconds later, Eira’s is going off.

“We should probably check that,” she insists, pulling away. The blankets pool at her waist, so I prop one arm behind me, more than enjoying the show as she climbs out of bed and crosses the room to where her pants ended up. She kneels, retrieves her phone, and presses it to her ear, turning to smile at me as she does.

My siren knows what she does to me.

“Hello?”

Her expression falters, her skin paling. I’m out of bed in the next heartbeat.

“We’re on our way.” Her gaze levels on mine. “Okay.”

“What is it?”

“Tarnley’s pub—it’s on fire.” Eira rushes across the bedroom to the dresser, but I’m frozen in place. Anger, rage, they burn through me because the only person who’d have any reason to torch the vampire’s place is—

It’s then I realize Eira’s standing directly in front of me, hands on my chest.

“We don’t know it was Sheelin,” she says calmly, as she slips her hands up onto my face. “It’s going to be okay, Fearghas.” She caresses the sides of my face with her thumbs, much like she did back on the cliffs. I reach up and grip her wrists then pull her in for a quick kiss.

“You calm me.”

“Good.” She releases me and pats my chest. “Now, get dressed because, apparently, Ridley will be here any minute to get us.”

As soon as she finishes saying it, I hear a masculine voice call out, “Here! Get your asses downstairs!”
